GRANITE WORKTOPS

One of the most popular types of kitchen worktops, granite takes millions of years to form. Over aeons of time, highly pressurised magma cools and hardens. The result is a stone with a unique colour pattern and stunning variations. Most importantly for homeowners, the material resists heat, scratches, and stains – provided it’s installed and maintained correctly.

Luckily, while installation should only be attempted by trained professionals, maintenance is easy! The worktops are sealed when they are installed and only require resealing once every ten years. Cleaning up everyday spills and messes is simple; just wipe with a soft microfibre cloth (not a sponge) and warm water. You can use either mild soap or a specialised granite spray to clean the counters, and you should avoid abrasive and harsh cleaners.

Once installed, you’ll be able to enjoy your new granite worktop virtually maintenance-free for years to come! Learn more when you call us today.

QUARTZ WORKTOPS

Quartz has become a more popular worktop over the years due to its uniform appearance, as well as its ability to resist stains and scratches. It’s a manufactured material, not a natural one, created using industrial techniques. Manufacturers combine and fortify natural quartz with resin to create worktops that are hard-wearing and predictable in appearance.

Many homeowners opt for quartz because it provides the best of both worlds: it has a natural stone look and feel, but it requires very little maintenance. In fact, it’s even easier to care for than granite! It requires less resealing and rarely chips. However, unlike with granite, you cannot place pots and pans hot from the stove or oven directly on the surface. Quartz is easy to clean: just wipe the surfaces down with a cloth and warm, soapy water.

DEKTON WORKTOPS & SPLASHBACKS

Like quartz, Dekton is a manufactured worktop material. Created from over 20 minerals, it combines the beauty of marble and granite with the heat-, scratch-, and stain-resistance you would expect from a high-quality manufactured material. The material comes in an endless array of patterns, colours, and textures, making it perfect for any home or commercial property.

Carbon-neutral, Dekton is incredibly versatile. It’s offered in a variety of thicknesses (8mm, 12mm, 20mm, 30mm, and even 4mm for furniture and cladding). Its durability makes it perfect for kitchen splashbacks and worktops, while its astounding array of design options allows it to seamlessly blend into any style of décor.

Best of all, Dekton is incredibly easy to care for. It naturally resists damage from everyday kitchen heat and messes. To keep it clean, all you need to do is wipe it down with soap and water.

SOLID WOOD WORKTOPS

Solid wood worktops are perfect for rustic, country spaces, giving any space a cosy and traditional look. Oak, beech, and maple are some of the most traditional wood options, but homeowners looking for something more contemporary or exotic can also opt for bamboo, iroko, or wenge. Many species are quite affordable, but more exotic options may carry a higher price tag.

A solid wood worktop can last for decades - if properly maintained. Wood worktops don’t stand up to scratches, stains, or heat the way stone and artificial worktops do. Wood will scorch when hot pans are placed directly on it, and kitchen utensils are likely to scratch it. The surfaces also need to be oiled biannually to keep stains and damage at bay. The good news is that when stains and damage do occur, they can easily be sanded away – something that’s not possible with other materials. Wood can also shift in colour over time, either becoming darker and richer with oiling or fading when exposed to sunlight. Some homeowners love this evolution, but others prefer a more consistent look.

From day to day, wood is relatively easy to clean and care for. Quickly wipe up stains and spills; avoid letting the worktop stay in contact with water for too long; and use soft cloths, warm water, and washing-up liquid for daily cleaning. Don’t use anything harsh or abrasive (like scouring pads) on the surface.

LAMINATE WORKTOPS

If you want the look of stone, wood, quartz, or Dekton worktops without the high price tag, laminate may be the option for you! The worktops are made by affixing a stiff sheet of material onto a particleboard core. They are very cost-effective and come in an endless variety of patterns and colours.

However, keep in mind that with laminate, you get what you pay for. While laminate resists many stains, it scratches easily – and once a laminate surface is scratched, it typically stays scratched. Laminate worktops are also liable to burn or peel. Make sure you do your research on laminate worktops and avoid the cheapest options, as those are liable to give you the most trouble.
